Welcome to our third edition of Nominet News for 2007.
The months since our previous edition have been extremely busy, exciting and challenging in equal measure.
At the beginning of June we released our Online Services for registrars and registrants. This major project enables customers to manage their accounts online and lays the foundations for significant developments in the future such as the launch of EPP. In this issue we hear from Jay Daley, Director of IT and Eleanor Bradley, Director of Operations about the challenges and successes associated with the data restructure and project implementation. On 5 June 2007 Margaret Hodge MBE MP, Minister for Industry and the Regions unveiled the Nominet Best Practice Challenge 2007, as part of an initiative by Nominet, DTI and key parliamentarians to create a UK Internet Governance Forum. The Best Practice Challenge will recognise organisations, groups or individuals that have worked to deliver a safer, more accessible, diverse Internet experience. More ›

Hello and Happy New Year to you all. Welcome to the first Nominet News of 2007. In this issue we take a look back at a couple of the highlights from the end of last year and offer a taste of what’s to come.
We have a brief report on the latest happenings at ICANN and its meeting in Sao Paulo, which we attended for the first time as a full member of the country code name support organisation.

Without doubt the Internet is an integral part of our everyday lives. Consequently the issue of how the Internet is governed is of growing interest to a much wider cross-section of society.
The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) was established by the United Nations at their World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in 2005. Although it has no powers to make binding decisions, the IGF is a multi-stakeholder forum that debates a range of issues relating to Internet Governance. More ›

A lot has happened in the Internet industry since the last issue, including a new agreement between the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the US Department of Commerce. On 9 October 2006 we hosted “The road to Athens”, a UK Internet governance stakeholder event at the RICS Venues Centre in London, which was instigated, organised and sponsored by Nominet.
A pre-cursor to the upcoming world Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Athens (30 October - 2 November), the forum built on our strategy of playing a leading role in the worldwide discussion of Internet Governance. This sees us working closely with organisations such as the United Nations, ICANN and worldwide domain name registry organisations as well as the IGF. More ›

With a new agreement between the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the US Department of Commerce confirmed, the organisation which oversees the Internet may now be in a position to become more autonomous.
Known as the ‘Joint Project Agreement’, the arrangement replaces the old ‘memorandum of understanding’ (MoU) which expired at the end of September 2006. Described by Dr Paul Twomey, CEO of ICANN, as “a major step forward for ICANN autonomy”, the agreement confirms that the US government will hand control of the Internet to the private sector in the future.
