Welcome

From Lesley Cowley, Chief Executive at Nominet

Welcome to our second edition of Nominet News for 2007.

In this issue we consider some of the current market issues surrounding .uk and the international domain space.

I have just returned from Lisbon, where the latest ICANN meeting took place and we have a report on the key issues discussed at that event. I also share some of my predictions for what the UK Internet industry might look like in five years’ time, as presented in my keynote speech to the UK Domain Channel Conference in February. A recent survey brings encouraging news about continued loyalty for .uk domains and we have the inside track on that story for you.

We have been working hard on developing and improving our Online Services for registrars and registrants and have devoted a considerable amount of resources to this major project over the past two years. You will soon be able to see the improved functionality of the system included in a major upgrade being released in June. In this issue we outline what you can expect to see and the implications for your own systems going forwards.

Another innovation for Nominet this year has been the advent of electronic communications. Following the change to our Articles at the EGM in November we have been able to introduce electronic communications including online voting in elections for the first time. This has already contributed to an increase in voting at the Policy Advisory Body election in March, and we are hoping for more of the same in the election for non-executive directors. We are delighted that so far over 1,600 members have signed up for electronic communications, with only 59 opting to continue to receive everything by post.

Finally, I would like to encourage you to respond to our governance consultation that closes on 9 May. Our Annual General Meeting is being held on 2 May in Manchester, and all Nominet members are warmly invited. I hope to see you there!
