Welcome

From Lesley Cowley, Chief Executive at Nominet

Hello and Happy New Year to you all. Welcome to the first Nominet News of 2007. In this issue we take a look back at a couple of the highlights from the end of last year and offer a taste of what’s to come.

We have a brief report on the latest happenings at ICANN and its meeting in Sao Paulo, which we attended for the first time as a full member of the country code name support organisation.

Emily Taylor, our Director of Legal and Policy, gives us her thoughts on the outcomes of the Internet Governance Forum and what it will mean for UK Internet users.

The end of 2006 also saw the completion of the first stage of our own corporate governance review and the successful outcome of our Extraordinary General Meeting at which our members voted to expand the scope of Nominet. We shall continue with our corporate governance review during 2007, commencing with a consultation about potential changes to our Articles of Association.

We are looking forward to exciting times this year. One of the first items on our agenda for 2007 will be the bid to become the UK ENUM tier one registry and we present some thoughts on this latest technology and its potential impacts.

This year will see us running further consultations, not least of which is the current consultation on our dispute resolution service (DRS). The subject of the DRS is important and we would encourage as many of you as possible to give us your feedback or attend the outreach event at the start of February and let us know your thoughts.

Our new Registrar Agreement comes into effect from 1st March this year. It is the outcome of significant consultation and discussion and seeks to ensure the delivery of high standards of service from those within the Internet industry.

Later in the year we will be moving to our new home, just around the corner on the Oxford Science Park, so, it’s already shaping up to be a busy year. I’m looking forward to 2007 and hope you all are too.
