IWF ten year anniversary

To mark the Internet Watch Foundation’s tenth anniversary and to raise awareness of its work combating child abuse on the Internet, you are cordially invited to a series of national conferences to learn about its work and join discussions.

Home Office Minister, Vernon Coaker MP will be speaking at the launch conference. Each of the following events, which begin at 11.00am, will be hosted by a local parliamentarian, feature an in-depth presentation by the IWF and lead into a panel discussion inviting comment and questions from delegates. Refreshments and a buffet will be available and the event should finish at around 1.30pm. Full details will be sent following registration.

Child abuse online is an important issue and combating child abuse online remains one of society’s most serious challenges. The IWF, which Nominet is a member of, hopes to attract delegates including parliamentarians, teachers, child protection workers, police, local authorities, industry representatives, online and IT professionals and those from associated charities and organisations.

The IWF is the only authorised organisation in the UK operating an Internet ‘hotline’ for the public to report their exposure to potentially illegal content online.

It works in partnership with governments, police, industry and the public to combat illegal Internet content, specifically:

  • child abuse images hosted anywhere in the world
  • criminally obscene content hosted in the UK
  • incitement to racial hatred content hosted in the UK

Through the hotline reporting system, the IWF helps ISPs combat abuse of their services through a ‘notice and take-down’ service and simultaneously invites the police to investigate the publisher. It also provides a database of child abuse websites to its members to help them implement blocking mechanisms to protect Internet users.
